Hotels in Porthmadog
Porthmadog was originally a busy maritime trading centre but is now a sought-after holiday destination, close to the breathtaking Snowdonia National Park and the charming Italianate village of Portmeirion. The town is also the home of the Porthmadog Maritime Museum, which examines the history of the local slate industry and Porthmadog's substantial shipbuilding industry.
The Ffestiniog Railway
Porthmadog is the terminus of the much-loved Ffestiniog Railway, which used to transport large quantities of slate after it was opened in the 1830s, although it closed in the 1940s and reopened later in the century as a tourist attraction. The line, which is the oldest narrow gauge railway in the world, comprises a 13.5 mile journey from Porthmadog to the historic quarrying settlement of Blaenau Ffestiniog, passing through breathtaking natural scenery along the way.
Snowdonia
If you're up for a big challenge, you can take a day trip to the Pen-y-Pass and hike all the way to the top of Mount Snowdon. At 1,085m, it is Wales' highest peak and the highest British peak outside of Scotland, although the summit can also be reached via the renowned Snowdon Mountain Railway from nearby Llanberis.
Snowdonia is the location of one of Wales' largest waterfalls, Swallow Falls, and the beautifully preserved medieval fort of Harlech Castle. The park also contains approximately 1,500 miles of public footpaths, and welcomes around 10 million visitors each year, which means it's one of the most visited national parks in Britain.
