Hotels in Petra
If you want to get away from it all and enjoy the slow pace and charming surroundings of a traditional Greek town, there's no better place to head than Petra on the Greek island of Lesbos.
We have charming Petra hotels for you in and around this sleepy, low-rise village: the perfect place to relax and recharge.
The traditional and modern combined
Cars and motorbikes are banned from the narrow streets of Petra, giving it the feel of the more remote traditional villages of Greece, whilst it's pretty beachfront has all the buzz of a thriving holiday spot. Walk away from the beachfront into the quiet streets in the centre of the village, and you'll see locals sipping ouzo and eat their ‘mezedes' (Greek tapas), oblivious to tourists. Petra really is the perfect mix of the charm of the unspoilt villages of bygone eras, with all the amenities and conveniences of a modern holiday resort.
Exploring Petra
Petra is overlooked by the church of the Glykfylousa Panagia (Our Lady of the Sweet Kiss) which sits on a mountaintop above it. The adventurous - and fit - can climb the 114 steps carved into the stone for a spectacular view of Petra and the surrounding countryside, right across to the coast of Asia Minor.
Vareltzidaina's House - a 17th-century Turkish merchant's house - is a beautifully preserved slice of life in Ottoman-era Greece, and is definitely worth a visit. Fine paintings still hang on the walls, and the house is run by local volunteers who will be able to fill you in on the local history and traditions.
If you'd like to go further afield, glass-bottomed boat tours take tourists out to the reef where they can enjoy sealife-spotting before heading to the scenic Rabbit Island, a local haven for wildlife.
Eating and drinking
There are plenty of great places to eat in Petra considering the size of the village, most of them serving Greek fare. Try the Women's Co-Operative Restaurant - run by the Petra Co-op - for authentic Greek food, a great atmosphere and views of the church. Family-run restaurant Thalassa has great sea views and delicious fresh seafood, including tender calamari and prawns. The Reef has a reputation for good music and cold beer and many of the restaurants advertise 'Greek Night' which can be great fun, with Greek bouzoukia music and even a belly dancer or two.
