Hotels in Otley

Lying on the boundary between north and west Yorkshire, in the stunning countryside of Lower Wharfedale, lies the charming market town of Otley.

The town dates back to Saxon times, at around the year AD620. Markets began around the year 1222, and the woollen industry started during the industrial revolution. By 1900, the printing industry was up and running in the town due to David Payne and William Dawson, who invented the Wharfedale printing machine. Much of the town has remained 18th and 19th century and will do so as it is a conservation area.

Many TV dramas shoot in Otley, so don't be surprised if you recognise scenery from Emmerdale, The Chase and Heartbeat. The Tour de France also passed through Otley in 2014 during the Grand Depart of the race.

Things to do

Wharfe Meadows Park is situated by the River Wharfedale. This has an outdoor gym, play park and water activities such as boating and canoeing. Great for children who need an adventure.

For arts and culture, step into the Otley Courthouse Farm Centre where different activities are held weekly, with great live music, theatre and film screenings. Heritage Lottery funding has also allowed the preservation of the original cell number block. The Courthouse ceased operating as such in 1997 and is now home to art exhibitions, craft fairs and also its own café, which serves Fairtrade teas and coffees and sandwiches from locally baked bread.

Take a trip to the old Grammar School for incredible work by local artists. The place also has links to Thomas Chippendale, a London cabinet maker and furniture designer in the mid-Georgian period.

For a country venture visit Braythorne Bees Honey House, a beautiful farmhouse-cum-shop selling honey, refreshments, sweet and savouries. The farmhouse also produces natural cosmetics made from pure beeswax, known for its soothing properties.

Nightlife in the pocket-sized town isn't overly rowdy so is suiSEOSITE_LEVEL_DESCRIPTION for family outings in the evening. Try the Otley Tap House for beautiful music, warm atmosphere and great ales. Everyone's raving about The Roebuck, not just because of their mouth-watering pies but also their entertainment, which calls for a cosy atmosphere.

Dining

Home to over 50 restaurants and cafes, Otley's eateries offer everything from Italian at A Casa di Alessa to Chinese at Hong Kong Super Cook 2. But be sure to venture to the others offering Moroccan, Thai and British cuisine. You won't be bored by the end of your stay; you'll be well cultured in food and you won't even have left your country.

Otley hotels offer something for everyone from spa break hotels to B&Bs and scenic inns, so there's something for you no matter how long or short your stay is.
