Hotels in Oia

A small coastal town, Oia is situated in the province of Pontevedra, Spain. A place of complete rest and relaxation, Oia is home to few distractions, allowing for a tranquil break. We have several Oia hotels from which to explore this delightful little town.

The most prevalent sight in the town is that of the Royal Monastery of Oia, situated on the edge of the stunning coastline. Built around 1137AD when King Alfonso VII gave the Hermitage of San Cosme to the Cistercian monks, the monastery owes its impressive appearance of strength to frequent pirate attacks. The monks themselves allegedly fired their guns against a squad of pirates, sinking an enemy ship. While the monastery is not currently open to the public, the exterior makes for an interesting setting against the mountain backdrop.

Things to see

Aside from the monastery, there are many other sights in the area. Around 3.5km from Centinela point, the remains of an Iron Age fort can be found. This fascinating archaeological site is named A Cabeciña and features rock art engravings and megalithic panholes.

Take time to visit the Ermita de San Sebastián, the hermitage of San Sebastián. The original shrine was dedicated to San Antonio and was rebuilt in around 1770, when the old hermitage was moved.

Enjoy a hike and some magnificent views in the Sobreiras do Faro forest in the Viladesuso area. Bark from the trees in the forest are made into excellent wine corks and are also commonly used as thermal insulation. There are some amazing views of the surrounding coastline from this height and you may catch a glimpse of wild horses grazing on the mountainside.

Food and drink

Food is revered in Oia and the area is host to many food festivals throughout the year. Of course there is excellent food available at other times during the year too - try a great tasting meal in Casa de Henriqueta or A Camboa. Relax with a drink in El Puerto or perhaps enjoy a delicious seafood dinner in Restaurante Lugar.
