Hotels in North Uist

North Uist is an island in the Outer Hebrides, to the north-east of mainland Scotland. The island constitutes a large area of starkly beautiful landscape and charming little fishing villages. North Uist hotels offer an excellent base from which to explore this enchanting land.

Beaches

North Uist has some of the best beaches in the Outer Hebrides and, whatever the weather, they are well worth a visit. If it's sunny, and that is not a rare occurrence in this part of the world, then Traigh Lingeigh is perfect for an invigorating swim. The water near the beach is also shallow and calm enough to make it a great place to go snorkelling.

If the weather isn't so nice, there are plenty of beaches that are wonderful spots for a windswept walk. The beach at Clachan has miles of sand and offers commanding views over the water, with mountains in the distance.

After a brisk hike, warm yourself up at the Hebridean Smokehouse, which is a few miles from the beach. This traditional establishment makes the most mouthwateringly delicious smoked salmon you will likely taste. If you are not into salmon, there are kippers and other smokies aplenty, all made using centuries-old smoking methods.

Lochmaddy

Lochmaddy is a village and the largest settlement on North Uist. It is here that you will most likely arrive on the island. The village is mostly made up of small cottages that present a picture-postcard scene as you disembark from the ferry.

When in the village, make sure you pop in to Taigh Chearsabhagh, the island's fabulous arts centre. Inside there are galleries full of work by local artists and a museum chronicling the island's rich history. The centre also has a lovely little café with homebaked cakes and all the tea you could desire.

If you're up for another walk, the coastline between Lochmaddy and Loch Portain offers a scenic route out of town. But don't just stick to the high road, for the shore contains hundreds of tiny lagoons called lochans that are wonderful for a dip.

‘The only pub in North Uist'

The Westford Inn can lay claim to being the only pub on the entire island. However, luckily for the North Uistians, it is a fine place in which to unwind after a long day.

Located on the west side of the island, the Westford has a wood-burning stove and a great selection of real ales on tap. It also boasts a fully furnished kitchen which serves up top-notch pub classics like fish and chips.
