Hotels in Nicosia
Located in the welcoming village of Nicosia in Sicily, Nicosia hotels are an excellent starting point for exploring the historical attractions and beautiful countryside of the province of Enna.
Nicosia contains a number of historical buildings that are well worth visiting. The Cathedral of San Nicolò dates back to the 14th century and features an elegant Gothic doorway as well as a number of paintings by the 18th-century artist José de Ribera. The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore was destroyed by a landslide in 1757 but quickly rebuilt facing the original site. If you enter the church you'll find a throne used by Emperor Charles V on his visit to the town in 1535.
A castle used to sit on the rocky outcrop above the town but all that remains now is an Ogive arch marking the entrance to the bastion. Even though the castle is gone, the view from the hill is spectacular and worth the climb. In the centre of Nicosia is Piazza Garibaldi, flanked by the Cathedral of San Nicolò and the 19th-century town palace.
There are a number of natural parks within easy driving range of Nicosia. Parco Naturale dei Nebrodi is to the north of the town, an area that encompasses vast lakes, mountains and woodland. Mount Soro is the highest peak in the area, offering breathtaking views of the Tyrrheanian coast and the Aeolian Islands. On the eastern side of the mountain you'll find Maulazzo Lake, spread out over five hectares. The area is perfect for walks, whether you're planning on a short stroll through the forests or a longer hike across the mountains.
Also within driving range of Nicosia is Parco dell'Etna, home to Mount Etna. One of Sicily's main tourist destinations, the area around Mount Etna has a number of walking routes and cableways leading to designated crater areas. Sapienza Refuge is the main tourist hub and provides information on the area as well as a ski centre.
