A short drive from the centre of Newry will take you to one of Northern Ireland's most stunning landscapes, the area surrounding the Mountains of Mourne. There are a number of excellent walking routes through this area for hikers of all ages and abilities. Slieve Donard is the highest of the mountains with a peak of 850 metres. If you make your way towards the summit you'll find the Mourne Wall, a stone wall that runs along the western and southern slopes of the mountain. Slieve Binnian is another is a rugged crest of tors with a summit of bare granite while Slieve Martin offers views of the Norman Narrow Water Castle.

To the west of Newry is the Ring of Gullion, another area of exceptional natural beauty that centres on Slieve Gullion. There is a network of routes that run around Gullion and Camlough Lake. Both the Mourne Mountains and the Ring of Gullion are frequently used as filming locations for a number of films and TV shows including the HBO series Game of Thrones.


Newry town centre has built up a reputation as one of the best shopping locations between Belfast and Dublin. The Quays Shopping & Leisure Complex encompasses an extensive collection of shops including River Island, HMV and Jack Jones as well as a modern cinema complex. The Buttercrane Shopping Centre is another large shopping centre, positioned beside Newry Canal. If you'd rather browse through some boutique shops, the Hill Street Area boasts a range of independent outlets selling everything from vintage clothing to fresh local produce. There are also a number of independent shops around the northern Sugar Island area.


The area surrounding Newry is ideal for a number of outdoor sports. Make your way to Donaghaguy Reservoir, Whitewater River or Newry Canal to find good fishing sports, with waters rich in brown trout, sea trout and salmon. If you fancy a round of golf, Ashfield Golf Course, Cloverhill Golf Course and Newry Golf Academy are all within easy reach of the town centre. Or if you'd like to try horse riding, Oakwood Riding School, Greenvale Trekking Centre and Barkston Equestrian Centre can all be reached by car from Newry.
