Hotels in Newhaven

Overlooking the English Channel coast, Newhaven hotels are an ideal base for exploring the flood plain of the River Ouse and the natural beauty of the South Downs.

Newhaven Fort

One of the main attractions in the town of Newhaven itself is Newhaven Fort. Located on Castle Hill, the fort was built in 1859 to defend the harbour of Newhaven and was the largest defence work ever built in Sussex. Today the fort is a museum and an excellent destination if you're travelling with family. In addition to a number of exhibitions detailing the history of the fort during both WWI and WWII, the fort features a network of tunnels built into the chalk cliff and a recreated Blitz street shelter simulation.

The coast

To the east of Newhaven is Seven Sister Country Park, encompassing 280 hectares of chalk cliffs, river valleys and chalk grasslands. The park is named after the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs and in addition to a network of hiking and cycling routes the area is also popular with birdwaters. Beachy Head lies slightly further to the east, along the Sussex Heritage Coast. To the west of Newhaven is a stretch of coast lead towards Brighton.

South Downs

Situated on the eastern end of the South Downs, Newhaven is a fantastic base for exploring this area of exceptional natural beauty. Castle Hill National Nature Reserve is within easy driving distance of the town, as is Lewes Down National Nature Reserve, located beside the town of Lewes. The hilltop area of Blackcap and Ditchling Beacon both offer breathtaking views of the surrounding area.

Brighton

A short journey west along the coast will take you to the lively city of Brighton. Here you'll find a large range of cultural and historical attractions, from Brighton Pier to Brighton Pavilion. Browse through trinkets and antiques in the Laines and head to one of Brighton's many pubs and bars to experience the area's famous nightlife.
