Beaches and watersports

With over 9km of sandy waterfront around Nerja there's plenty of space to enjoy a beachside holiday, whether you plan to make sandcastles with the kids or bask in the sun with a good book. Playa Burriana is set on the eastern side of town and is the most popular destination for sunbathing. Calahonda Beach is one of Nerja's smaller beaches and still has traditional fishermen's cottages built into the rocks. El Chucho Beach is set beside a long promenade, Carabeo Beach is situated in a quiet cove and El Playazo is a long beach on the western end of town.

In addition to beach sports such as volleyball, many of the beaches offer the chance to rent boats and head out onto the water. Pedalos, Banana Boats and Jet skis can all be hired at Playa Burriana, while snorkelling and diving classes can be booked at Buceo Nerja Costa.

Countryside

There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy on land in Nerja. There are a number of companies such as Cortijo Hidalgo that offer horse riding tours of the Andalucían countryside. If you'd prefer something a little faster paced, there are Buggy Tours and Jeep Tours of the countryside as well as motocross trail riding routes for drivers of all experiences. Of course, you could always explore the countryside on two feet – there are plenty of walking routes around Nerja.

Tapas and bars

Nerja is a great place to indulge in authentic Spanish Tapas, and hopping from one bar to another as you sample dishes and drinks can be a fun and social way to spend an evening. If you've already eaten and want to kick back with a cocktail, Nerja has a staggering amount of bars to choose from – nearly 300 in fact. If you're in the mood for live music Plaza Tutti Frutti is a popular area and one of the main centres of nightlife in Nerja, and if you'd rather unwind with a seated meal there are plenty of international restaurants to serve everyone's tastes, from Japanese sushi to Italian lasagne.

Further afield

If you hop on a bus you'll find that Nerja is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area. Ten minutes on the road will take you to the quiet village of Frigiliana where you'll find picturesque cobbled streets, narrow alleys and cosy restaurants serving local Muscatel wine. Also nearby is La Herradura, a charming beachside town with a beautiful harbour area. If you're looking for a bigger town, Almuñecar is lively point on the Costa Tropical. Here you'll find the fascinating San Miguel Castle and Archaeological Museum, the El Majuelo Botanical Gardens and the Almuñécar Aquarium, all of which are well worth the 30-minute trip from Nerja.
