Hotels in Naxos
Located on the largest island in the Cyclades, Naxos hotels are surrounded by mythical monuments, isolated beaches and welcoming fishing villages.
Myth and history
According to Greek myth, Naxos is where Theseus abandoned Ariadne after she helped him to defeat the Minotaur in the Cretan labyrinth. Dionysus, the God of wine and protector of the island, fell in love with Ariadne. Today, the island is still well known for its alcohol. The Vallindras Distillery in Halki offers free tours and offers a chance to see how kitron is traditionally made using ancient jars and copper stills.
One of the most famous ancient sites on the island is the Temple of Apollo in Naxos Town. For a more comprehensive overview of classical artefacts, make your way to the Archaeological Museum in the Kastro of Naxos. Here you'll find a range of Ionic and Doric objects as well as a statue of Antonius, the Roman General.
The 17th-century Bazeos Castle is another must-see during your stay, located close to the village of Sangri. The castle was originally built in the 17th century as the Monastery of Timios Stavros but was abandoned in the 19th century when the Bazeos family took it up. The castle is now a cultural centre and features a range of concerts and theatre performances. For an insight into the Venetian past head to the Della Rocca-Barozzi Venetian Museum, housed in a 13th-century tower house.
Beaches and watersports
Naxos is an excellent destination if you're planning to relax on the beach. Agios Prokopios, Plaka and Agia Anna are the most popular beaches on the island and there are also a number of isolated coves that are ideal for naturists. If you'd like to try your hand at snorkelling or diving, Bluefindivers Naxos Diving Center offers trips around the reefs and shipwrecks that surround the island.
Food and drink
There are plenty of options when it comes to restaurants on Naxos, serving everything from local specialties to international favourites. Cheese is a favourite dish on the island and there are a few varieties you should try during your stay. These include Arseniko Kefalotiri, a hard white cheese, and Ladotiro, an oily cheese best served with raki. Another local speciality is Naxian potatoes, said to be the best in the whole of Greece. Sefoukloti is a local pie made with plenty of herbs and Patoudo is a local dish of stuffed lamb.
