Hotels in Muscat

Situated in the capital of Oman, Muscat hotels are a gateway to this traditional and culturally rich city. A great choice if you're looking for bustling souks and historical buildings.

Traditional buildings

The stringent planning laws in Muscat mean that pretty much all buildings in the city have to adhere to a traditional Arabian style. One of the most impressive examples of Islamic architecture is Muscat's Grand Mosque, which can accommodate a staggering 20,000 worshippers and contains the second-largest hand-loomed Iranian carpet in the world. Another area worth visiting is the Sultan's Palace, which features colourful yellow and blue pillars. The palace is closed to the public but make sure you get a photograph outside the front entrance.

Culture

One of the main centres of culture in Muscat is the Royal Opera House. Built by the same architects who designed the Grand Mosque, the building is a fusion of marble and Arabesque designs and has seen many famous names in opera and ballet grace its stage. Even if you don't watch a performance, the building is still worth seeing.

The best place to get a glimpse of Oman's seafaring heritage is by paying a visit to the National Museum. Here you'll find a collection of historical boasts amongst a large collection of other artefacts charting the area's history. Muscat Gate Museum is another museum to visit, making the location of the old city walls, as are the Museum of Omani Heritage, Omani French Museum and the Omani Aquarium and Marine Science and Fisheries Centre.

Seaside

Muscat's position beside the sea means that there're plenty of beachside activities to get up to. Qurm Beach is a sandy stretch beside Qurm Nature Reserve, and an ideal place to enjoy a picnic with the family or unwind with a spot of sunbathing. The Corniche, the main port area, is where you'll see fishermen delivering their daily catch ready to be sent straight to the market.

Shopping

If you're looking to shop in Muscat, the Omani Heritage Gallery sells a number of locally made craft items while the Sabco Centre is a small souk selling everything from shawls and headdresses to fabrics and trinkets. For a busier souk experience you'll want to make your way to Muttrah Souk, where you'll find a maze of spices, silverwork and gold, as well as a number of excellent cafés and bars.
