The medieval city of Montepellier is conveniently situated within easy reach of the Mediterranean Sea in the south of France. Its winding alleyways and steep inclines, give it an aged, romantic feel. A significant number of Montpellier hotels can be found within the oldest part of the city, with its beautifully preserved 16th and 18th century architecture. With excellent shopping, some great restaurants and a lively nightlife within close proximity, it's the perfect place from which to explore the surrounding area.

Cultural highlights:

For some historical landmarks, visit the impressive 17th-century Arc de Triomphe marking the entrance to the city, known as the Porte du Peyrou. Then there's the Tour des Pins, the last remains element of the medieval city walls and the La Baboote tower, a medieval watchtower with a restaurant at its base.

For a lively square bursting with cafes, shops and restaurants, look no further than the Place de la Comedie. Nearby lies the Musee Fabre, first established in 1825, it houses a particularly fine collection of paintings spanning the 17th to the 19th centuries as well as sculptures and ceramics from all over Europe.

Visit the oldest botanical garden in the whole of France, known as the Jardin des plantes de Montpellier, with its stunning parkland and rare collection of native plants.
