Hotels in Montpellier

The medieval city of Montepellier is conveniently situated within easy reach of the Mediterranean Sea in the south of France. Its winding alleyways and steep inclines, give it an aged, romantic feel. A significant number of Montpellier hotels can be found within the oldest part of the city, with its beautifully preserved 16th and 18th century architecture. With excellent shopping, some great restaurants and a lively nightlife within close proximity, it's the perfect place from which to explore the surrounding area.

Cultural highlights:

For some historical landmarks, visit the impressive 17th-century Arc de Triomphe marking the entrance to the city, known as the Porte du Peyrou. Then there's the Tour des Pins, the last remains element of the medieval city walls and the La Baboote tower, a medieval watchtower with a restaurant at its base.

For a lively square bursting with cafes, shops and restaurants, look no further than the Place de la Comedie. Beautiful both in the day and when lit up at night, you can enjoy a glass of wine and watch the world go by. Look out for the fountain called the Three Graces in the centre of the square, built in 1790 by the sculptor Etienne d'Antoine. Nearby lies the Musee Fabre, first established in 1825, it houses a particularly fine collection of paintings spanning the 17th to the 19th centuries as well as sculptures and ceramics from all over Europe.

Visit the oldest botanical garden in the whole of France, known as the Jardin des plantes de Montpellier, with its stunning parkland and rare collection of native plants. Established in 1593, it has an enchanting Orangery, a landscaped arboretum and an English Garden, complete with a greenhouse and pool.

Things to do:

There's free entry to the Henri de Lunaret Zoo to consider, or a fabulous family trip to the Mare Nostrum Aquarium, where you can experience being on a boat in a storm, or watch the sharks circle and the penguins play.

Renowned for its wine production, a visit to Montpellier could easily incorporate a trip to its lush vineyards, where you get to sample your favourite wine alongside some delicious regional cuisine. There are a number of tour companies available, including Montpellier Wine Tours that provide you with a driver for the day.

The Chateau de Flaugergues is a charming French folly, noSEOSITE_LEVEL_DESCRIPTION for its unusual three-storey staircase. With formal gardens to explore and a spot of wine tasting to be done, this is a perfect place to spend a congenial afternoon in the sun.

Montpellier has two large concert venues; L'Arena and Le Zenith Sud, both of which hold large-scale events throughout the year. Every summer, a musical festival known as The Festival de Radio France et Montpellier is held, where celebrated musicians from both the classical and jazz worlds come together to create a host of exceptional events that are held throughout the city.
