If you plan to visit in May, watch out for one of the most celebrated motorcar races in the world, the annual Monaco Grand Prix. With its punishing course and glamorous setting, it's a spectacular event not to be missed.

Things to see:

The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco offers a tantalising glimpse beneath the waves. A number of aquariums and exhibitions are available to both educate and entertain the whole family. With over 6,000 species and sizable collection of natural history, there's no shortage of things to see.

For a spot of people-watching, there's nowhere more impressive than Casino Square. Take in the opulent ambience that exudes from the beautifully ornate buildings, historic statues, stylish cafés and high-end designer shops that can be found around the square. Just sit back and sip a beer while you watch a steady stream of super cars such as Ferraris, Bugattis and Bentleys come and go. For a fee, you can also gain entry to the iconic Casino of Monte-Carlo where you can try your luck at roulette, or wander around the surrounding parkland and manicured gardens.

Take a stroll around the harbour with the gentle sway of its luxury yachts. Watch the sunset over a glass of wine, looking out across the bay. Alternatively, take a walk along the promenade and revel in the peaceful ambience of the Japanese Gardens, complete with authentic teahouse, koi carp and pavilion.

Dip your toes in the sea as you wander along Larvotto Beach with an ice cream. This is the ideal place for beach sports, where jet skiing, windsurfing and sea parachuting are available between May and September.
