Two castles

Mugdock Country Park is where you'll find the remains of a 14th-century castle, once a fortress of the Grahams of Montrose. Here too are the ruins of Craigend Castle built in the 19th century. The grounds provide opportunities for fabulous walks, with its network of paths, and some terrific views. Kids can enjoy the adventure playgrounds, and there is also a WWII anti-aircraft gun site.

Scotland's first long-distance walk - and its most popular - is the West Highland Way. Beginning at Milngavie and finishing at Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis, the route is 96 miles in total and serves as an excellent introduction to the Scottish Highlands.

Start the West Highland Way at Milngavie and after about 12 miles you'll find yourself in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. From here on in you'll have access to mountains, glens, local wildlife, historic houses and impressive castles, a wildlife park and an adventure park. And, of course, you'll see Loch Lomond, the UK's third biggest body of water and Scotland's largest freshwater loch.

Restaurants and cafés

Milngavie is home to a selection of eateries offering something to suit most tastes. Café Alba is a family run restaurant that pledges to use as many Scottish ingredients as possible including fish from Scottish waters. For continental European cuisine, Andiamo is a popular bar restaurant serving classic and modern Italian dishes. If you're in need of a refreshing tea or coffee, Jessie Biscuit, Bullands Coffee House and The Tea Cosy should do the trick. And for food and music with a distinctly American flavour, Meet Me at the Corner has been cooking up a storm.

Shopping in and around Milngavie

Most of the town's shops can be found in Douglas Street, Main Street and Mugdock Road. You'll be able to get hold of most essentials, as well as fashion and hairdressers. Of course, with Glasgow city centre less than a 30-minute train journey away, you have all that Scotland's preeminent metropolis has to offer.
