The delightful market town of Mildenhall sits in the north-east of Suffolk, roughly halfway between Cambridge and Norwich. Book a Mildenhall hotel with us and explore this little gem close to the largest lowland pine forest in the UK.
Arts and culture
Suffolk's biggest church can be found in Mildenhall and the 14th-century west window at St Mary's is considered by many to be one of the best in England. The carved aisle roof, etched with distinctive figures, and ornate wooden pews are of particular note.
Mildenhall and District Museum is the perfect place to learn about the town's fascinating history. You'll find fossils and flint from prehistoric times, some of which you can handle. A prize exhibit is the Lakenheath Warrior and his horse. These Anglo-Saxon remains include a bridle, sword and shield, all of which are thought to hail from around AD 500. You'll also have the chance to learn about the mystery of the Mildenhall Treasure.
Call of the wild
Perhaps Mildenhall's biggest attraction is nature itself. The nearby River Lark is ideal for country walks as well as angling where you stand a good chance of landing a carp, chub or grayling.
RSPB Lakenheath Fen, at nearby Thetford, is a large wetland with grazing marshes and lots of reed beds which attract marsh harriers, bearded tits, reed warblers and sedge warblers. Keep your eyes peeled too for woodpeckers, garden warblers, blackcaps and golden orioles. During the winter, kingfishers and barn owls are a common sight. Drop in at the visitor centre to learn about the history of the area and get more information on the wildlife.
Thetford Forest is the perfect location for a day out. Here you'll find an array of plant and animal life and a blend of pines, heathland and broadleaves. There are also plenty of attractions and activities including assault courses with zip-slides and rope swings as well as 26 walking trails.
Restaurants and cafés
There's a surprisingly diverse range of cuisine on offer in Mildenhall. You can taste Caribbean flavours in the English countryside courtesy of D&G Jamaican Takeaway, which provides patrons with food to go which is freshly prepared using Jamaican herbs and spices.
