Hotels in Malmo
One of the world's most bike-friendly cities, Malmo is the third largest settlement in Sweden and offers a fantastic blend of historic and ultra-modern landmarks.
The city was probably established at least 700 years ago, although it belonged to Denmark for several centuries before it was acquired by Sweden after the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658. Malmo is also one of Scandinavia's fastest-growing cities, with residents representing more than 170 nationalities.
Major attractions
Malmo Castle
One of Scandinavia's great fortresses, Malmo Castle was founded in the early-15th century, when it would have defended Denmark from Swedish invaders. However, the original castle was removed and replaced in the 16th century, and the new building served as a prison until the early 20th century.
The Øresund Bridge
Europe's longest combined rail and road bridge, Øresund Bridge is eight kilometres long and links Sweden to the Danish island of Peberholm. The bridge opened in the year 2000 and received the Outstanding Structure Award by the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering in 2002.
Turning Torso
Sweden's tallest skyscraper, the Turning Torso was pioneered by Santiago Calatrava, the renowned Spanish architect, and opened in 2005. The landmark, which is near the outskirts of Malmo, features a unique 'twisted' shape, hence its unusual name, and is also one of the world's highest residential buildings.
Other places to visit in Malmo
Malmö Konsthall, a chic contemporary art venue, celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2015 and is one of the most-visited art venues in Scandinavia. The Lila Torg area, meanwhile, is one of the city's main social spaces and is surrounded by several acclaimed nightlife venues and elegant restaurants. To see the oldest surviving building in the city, visit St Peter's Church, which dates back to the early-14th century and contains an impressive 105m tower.
