The Malia Minoan Palace

Originally built almost 4,000 years ago, the Malia Minoan Palace was part of a strategic ancient settlement and was rebuilt around 1650 BC. However, this was severely damaged around 200 years later, and was accompanied by a sanctuary in the Mycenean period. You can visit the site and see the remnants of the altar, the Pillar Crypt, the Royal Apartments and other sections of the ruined ancient landmark.

Knossos, nearby

Considered by many archaeologists to be the oldest city in Europe, Knossos, was built at least 9,000 years ago, although it was not rediscovered until the late-19th century. The city, which was five kilometres wide, was the administrative capital of Crete and was home to around 100,000 residents at its peak.

In eastern Crete, Chania is one of the most picturesque ports in the Mediterranean and is revered for its beautiful Venetian architecture. The city is the home of the Archaeological Museum of Chania, which contains many interesting artefacts from the Roman and Minoan eras and features a remarkable Roman mosaic floor.

If you have the time, consider a day trip to the spectacular cove of Loutro, on the southern coast, which is one of Greece's most photogenic seaside villages. For more wonderful scenery, head to the mountains and visit the formidable Samariá Gorge, a World's Biosphere Reserve and one of Europe's great canyons.
