Originally a quiet fishing hamlet, Lytham grew significantly in the 20th century and is now joined with St-Annes-on-Sea. Consequently, many people refer to it as Lytham St Annes, because the two original towns now form a popular seaside resort, more laid back and secluded than bustling Blackpool to the north.

One of the most affluent communities in northern England, Lytham St Annes features four famous golf courses, one of which is a host course for the British Open of the prestigious Open Championship.

Major events in Lytham

One of the highlights of the local calendar is the Lytham Festival, which takes place annually, next to the Lytham Windmill, and comprises a special prom with performances from many distinguished music acts. Another important annual event is the Lytham Beer Festival, which has been held since 2007 and offers people the opportunity to try dozens of real ales and other special beers.

Lytham Hall

Near the edge of Lytham St Annes, Lytham Hall is an alluring Georgian landmark with charismatic Palladian features. The Grade I listed building is surrounded by many acres of scenic parkland, and replaced a much older former building dating back to the Middle Ages.

The Lytham Windmill

This 19th-century landmark, which benefited from a substantial restoration in the 1980s, has been converted into a special museum, and attracts around 20,000 visitors each year. On four floors of exhibition space, visitors can learn about the heritage of windmills and the role of milling in Lytham St Anne's history.
