Hotels in Lowestoft
The most easterly point of the United Kingdom, Lowestoft is a traditional seaside town in Suffolk, an ideal holiday location for all ages with splendid beaches and great family attractions.
Some of the earliest evidence of settlement in the whole of Britain has been found in the town and it has a long and varied history. A port town as well as a traditional seaside resort, we have a number of Lowestoft hotels from which to explore the area.
History
Flint tools discovered in the cliffs at Pakefield in South Lowestoft in 2005 proved the existence of human habitation in the Lowestoft area 700,000 years ago. This makes the area one of the earliest known sites for human habitation in the country.
Lowestoft was originally settled during the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages and also during the Roman and Saxon periods. The settlement's name is derived from the Viking personal name Hlothver, and toft, a Viking word for homestead.
Things to do
Lowestoft first developed as a bathing site in the 1760s, which led to the town becoming a major seasonal resort. The coast has the nickname of the Sunrise Coast and the town has wonderful beaches and two piers, which both provide tourist facilities.
Beside the sea, and housed in a pretty flint cottage in Sparrow's Nest Gardens, visitors can find the Lowestoft Maritime Museum. The Museum offers its guests an extensive series of displays, with many hands-on activities including lots for children to do and see.
For an adrenaline rush for the whole family, take a trip to Pleasurewood Hills Theme Park which is situated on the northern edge of the town. Set within 50 acres of enclosed coastal parkland, Pleasurewood Hills has much to see and do. Take a ride on Wipeout, the tallest and fastest coaster in the east of England! Get soaked on the Timber Falls log flume, or plummet 60ft per second on the Jolly Roger Drop Tower.
For a quieter day out, you might like to visit Somerleyton Hall, a finely preserved Tudor period mansion, in which you can take a trip back in time. Set within a beautiful 5000-acre English estate, the hall is often referred to as one of the most beautiful stately homes in the UK.
Food and drink
Being a classic seaside town and fishing port, you can expect to find plenty of seafood and fish and chips in Lowestoft, and it all tastes simply delicious. Try Markg for a wonderful seafood dinner.
Seafood aside, there are a wide variety of cuisines in the town. Desmonds is well known in the area for great pizza and pasta, while Beau Thai offers delicate Thai food in a unique and beautiful setting.
Stop off at Tea By The Sea and enjoy a cup of tea and slice of cake as the world goes by or grab fish and chips at Perry's and take a stroll on the pier.
