Hotels in Lourdes

Famous for the supposed apparitions of The Virgin Mary and its healing waters, Lourdes is a small market town lying in the foothills of the Pyrenees in Southern France.

Overlooked from the south by the Pyrenean peaks of Aneto, Montaigu and Vignemale, it is the perfect place to enjoy mountain treks and hikes, peaceful fishing, white water sports and great French food. We have a number of Lourdes hotels from which to explore the surrounding scenic area.

Pilgrimages

Until 1858, Lourdes was a nothing more than a small, quiet French country town. On 11 February 1858, a 14-year-old local girl, Bernadette Soubirous, claimed a beautiful lady appeared to her in the remote Grotto of Massabielle. The lady identified herself as the Immaculate Conception and since that day, the faithful have believed her to be the Blessed Virgin Mary. It's claimed she has appeared 18 times in total, and soon after in 1864, the Our Lady of Lourdes statue was erected at the site.

Since 1858 Lourdes has become a major site for pilgrimages and miraculous healings, and has such an important place within the Roman Catholic Church that Pope John Paul II visited the shrine twice in his lifetime.

Holy water

Lourdes water has become the clear focus of devotion to the Virgin Mary at Lourdes. Since 1858, 1000s of visitors have claimed to have been cured by drinking or bathing in it, and the Lourdes authorities provide it free of charge to any who ask for it. In 1858, the water was tested by a Toulouse professor, who found it to be potable, pure and inert.

Things to do

Visitors can also enjoy many leisure activities in and around Lourdes. Fishing is particularly popular in an enormous lake nearby, formed by a massive melted glacier, with the Pyranees providing the scenery. Other attractions on the lake include sailing, rowing and pedalos, while a trek via mountain bike or horse is a fantastic way to see the views the area has to offer. The south bank of the lake also offers an 18-hole golf course.

Take a trip to the Mauvezin Castle, a medieval fortress which was built between the 11th and 14th centuries by the counts of Bigorre. The castle is a perfect family attraction with spectacular views, an archaeological museum, gun room and reconstructions of historical scenes.

Excursions throughout the town offer trips into the mountains themselves, allowing you to enjoy some of the most magnificent scenery that France has to offer. Take the funicular, a train that runs up to the Pic du Jer.

Food and drink

French food is renowned, and you can expect some delicious evening meals in Lourdes. The Grill Alexandra offers wonderful steak dinners for a reasonable price, while Resto de Marco has some fantastic pizza and pasta dishes on the menu. A great French gastropub, Brasserie de la Grotto is also well worth a visit. After dinner make sure to sample some delicious French ice cream from the Gelateria Artigianale.
