Hotels in Loughton

A small town in the Epping Forest district of Essex, Loughton is located 12 miles north-east of Charing Cross in London. With many beautiful buildings and a vast forest, as well as nearby London, there is plenty on offer and we have many Loughton hotels from which to explore the area.

Loughton's earliest known structure is Loughton Camp, an Iron Age earth fort in Epping Forest which dates back to around 500 BC. Hidden by dense undergrowth for centuries, it was rediscovered in 1872. The settlement remained a small village until the early 17th century when the high road was extended north through the forest and quickly became the main route from London to East Anglia.

There is much to do in Loughton, from shopping and dining out to hiking or cycling through the forest, and there are noSEOSITE_LEVEL_DESCRIPTION buildings throughout the town.

Epping Forest is around a 10 minute walk from the railway station to the entrance of the forest. Climb Staples Hill, where the tradition of lopping to ensure the survival of the forest was once practised, or find the ancient Loughton Camp. If hiking isn't of interest, why not hire a bicycle and make your way around the forest along one of the many trails? Maps are available in the area.

The British Postal Museum Store on Lenthall Road is home to many interesting post-related objects. From the desk of Rowland Hill (founder of the Penny Post), to mobile Post Office vehicles and a vast collection of different post boxes, you'll find it's a surprising collection.

Loughton Library is home to the National Jazz Archive, the UK's repository and research centre for printed material, photographs and memorabilia relating to jazz. Founded by jazz trumpeter Digby Fairweather in 1988, it contains an unrivalled collection of British jazz memorabilia and holds regular celebrity and live jazz events.
