Hotels in Letchworth

Located in the world's first garden city, Letchworth Hotels are an ideal choice if you're looking to combine the best of town and country, from shopping in farmers' markets to visiting local arts centres.

Garden City

Although the history of Letchworth can be traced back to the 12th and 13th centuries, it wasn't until the 19th century that the town took on its shape as a garden city. Following the publication of Ebenezer Howard's book, To-morrow: A Peaceful Path to Real Reform in 1898, Letchworth was redeveloped to combine the advantages of cities and the countryside. One of the best places to learn about this ethos surrounding Letchworth is The International Garden Cities Exhibition. Also worth a visit to learn about Ebenezer Howard is the Howard Memorial Hall, Letchworth Garden City's first public building.

Arts

Letchworth has a strong local arts scene, and the town boasts a number of excellent galleries. Letchworth Arts Centre is the main cultural hub in Letchworth and in addition to exhibitions, hosts an impressive range of talks, classes, theatre, comedy and dance performances. The Imperial Arts Audio Gallery (IAAG) is the best place in the town to find contemporary art and design, and features a varied line-up of live music. If you're travelling with kids, the Dot to Dot gallery, with its regular raft activities, is a fantastic place to have fun making art.

Outdoors

Letchworth is surrounded by farms, parks and nature reserves. The Woodside Farm & Leisure Park gives kids a chance to come face to face with animals including monkeys, llamas and flamingos, while the RSPB Lodge Nature Reserve spans an enormous 180 hectares of woodland, heath and grassland. Woburn Safari Park is near to Letchworth, as is ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, with over 2,500 different animals to encounter.

Whether you're looking for high street stores or boutique stalls, Letchworth has a fantastic range of shops to explore. The Garden Square Shopping Centre has a range of big-name brands, The Wynd & The Gallery feature a selection of independent retailers and Leys Square holds regular farmers' markets – full of fresh local produce, cakes and pies.
