History

The history of Leigh-on-Sea stretches back as far as the Saxon period, and from the medieval period all the way to the 20th century, the town was a prosperous market centre. Today, the town is part of the larger area of Southend-on-Sea. St Clement's Church is one of the oldest buildings in the town, dating back to the 15th century and featuring a stunning red brick Tudor porch. Another good history spot is the Leigh-on-Sea Heritage Centre, where you can learn about the area's connection to the Mayflower and the evacuation of Dunkirk's beaches.

Featuring seven miles of sandy seafront, Southend-on-Sea is a popular destination for sun-worshipers. Leigh-on-Sea is in an excellent position for visiting some of the area's best beaches, including Three Shells Beach close to the main pier, the popular Jubilee Beach or the quieter Chalkwell Beach – ideal for refreshing strolls beside the sea.

The longest pleasure pier in the world, Southend Pier, is nearby. Stretching over two kilometres, the pier has its own rail service that takes travellers from one end to the other. Whether you plan on fishing on the pier or taking in the view at the contemporary Royal Pavilion, Southend Pier is an impressive structure to behold.
