History

The borough of Ledbury dates back to around 690 and is home to some of England's best-preserved medieval and Tudor buildings. The Market House is a striking Grade I listed building, originally built in 1617 when it was used for storing wool, grain and hops. The house stands on 16 raised pillars and is the best example of this architectural style in the country.

Another important historical attraction is Ledbury's parish church, St Michael's and All Angels Church. The church dates back to 1140 and the site was originally home to an older Anglo Saxon church. The detached spire, which reaches 200 feet, can be seen for miles around.

To really delve into the history of Ledbury, head to the impressive Heritage Centre, housed in a building dating back to 1480 that used to be a boy's grammar school during the 17th century. Also worth a trip is the Butcher Row House Folk Museum, housed in a 16th-century building and containing a range of historical costumes.

Poetry

Ledbury is well known for its connection to the world of poetry. It was home to the Victorian poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, was the birthplace of the former poet laureate John Masefield, and was the inspiration of William Wordsworth's sonnet ‘St. Catherine of Ledbury'. Every year in the summer the town hosts the Ledbury Poetry Festival, an array of readings, talks, music and family events.

Nearby attractions

Explore the surrounding countryside and you'll find a range of places to visit. Eastnor Castle is a stone's throw from the town and an ideal choice if you're travelling with the family. As well as the castle itself the grounds have a maze, a kid's play area, a deer park and an arboretum. Also nearby is Newent Lake Park, boasting a picturesque lake surrounded by trees and pathways. The large Jacobean Hellens Manor is also close – a great way to step into history.

Further afield

A short drive north from Ledbury will take you to Worcester, where you'll find Worcester Cathedral and the Museum of Royal Worcester. Drive south instead and within half an hour you'll be in Gloucester and Cheltenham, where you'll find a number of historical and cultural attractions as well as a range of modern shops, restaurants and bars.
