Hotels in Lechlade
Set in a small market town in the Cotswolds where the Rivers Coln and Leach join the Thames, Lechlade hotels are a great choice for picturesque walks, relaxing river cruises and warm nights in the pub.
The River Thames
Lechlade was historically on one of the main trade routes into London by boat. Today the trade vessels have been replaced with leisure boats offering cruises downstream, potentially all the way to London. St John's Lock in Lechlade is the highest lock on the Thames, with a statue of Old Father Thames standing beside the water and watching over the boating activities. Carrying the A417 over the river is St John's Bridge, dating from 1886 but built on the site of a much earlier bridge built in 1229. The view from the lock also includes St Lawrence's parish church, the spire of which inspired poetry from the famous Romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley.
Outdoors sports
The Cotswolds is renowned as a place to enjoy the outdoors, whether you plan on hiking, cycling, horse riding or fishing. There are a vast number of walking routes in and around Lechlade to enjoy for trekkers of all abilities. Bikes can be easily rented from one of the many nearby cycling centres and there are also a number of Cotswold Riding Schools if you'd like to try your hand at horse riding.
Pubs
Lechlade is home to some charming pubs and restaurants – a perfect destination after a day spent walking or cruising down the river. The Trout Inn has a fantastic selection of local ales, The Riverside serves mouth-watering British cuisine alongside views of the river, and The Swan is an ideal choice if you're looking to curl up with a good book next to a roaring open fire.
Further afield
Lechlade is excellently situated for daytrips to a number of cities. A short drive south will take you to the town of Swindon and from there you're within easy distance of both Bath and Bristol. In Bath there are a number of historical attractions, such as the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey, and in Bristol you'll find a vibrant range of shops, restaurants, cafés and bars. Also close to Lechlade in the opposite direction is Oxford, where you'll find Oxford University and Oxford Castle.
