Beach and promenade
Le Touquet boasts a unique combination of French elegance and British seaside fun. The main pull for tourists to the area has to be the broad sandy beaches, stretching out over seven kilometres. One of the main attractions on the beachside promenade is the vintage Fun Fair, featuring a traditional old carousel with wooden horses and a number of fun water slides. If you're in the mood for something more relaxed, simply take the time to amble from café to café along the promenade before kicking back with a cocktail on the sandy stretch.
For an insight into the area's history, the best place to visit is Le Touquet Museum. Housed in a villa dating from 1925, the museum has an impressive array of international paintings by around 200 different painters who visited the town in the early 20th century. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum also has a number of excellent temporary exhibitions.
Le Touquet has a long-standing connection to sport, and the area offers a fantastic number of different activities to enjoy. One of the best ways to get to know the local are is by hiring a bike and following one of the many routes that wind past forests, villas and the beach. If you'd rather explore your surroundings on foot, there is a selection of hiking trails around Le Touquet. The forest and dunes also mean that the area is great for horse riding, with the local equestrian centre offering outings for riders of all abilities.
Another popular pastime in Le Touquet is golf. Head to Golf du Touquet and have a swing on one of three different courses – two 18-hole courses and one 9-hole course. Le Mer is a links golf course dating back to 1931 and offers breathtaking sea views as you play.
There are also plenty of sports you can enjoy in the water. Base Nautique Nord is a water sports centre and offers lessons in sailing, windsurfing and kayaking.
Travel outside Le Touquet and a short drive north will take you to Boulogne-sur-Mer, a historical city with attractions including the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Boulogne and Fort Mahon. A short drive south will take you to the city of Abbeville, where you'll find a range of modern shops, restaurants and bars.
