Laugharne is perhaps most famous for being the home of the Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas, and the inspiration for his poem, Under Milk Wood. Laugharne hotels serve as an excellent base for exploring this charming town and its beautiful, varied surroundings.

Dylan Thomas

Repeatedly visited by Dylan Thomas, the poet eventually settled in Laugharne for the final years of his life, and poetry lovers often make a pilgrimage to the town to explore the area where Dylan Thomas worked and lived. The Dylan Thomas Boathouse is where the poet resided from 1949 to 1953 with his wife and their three children. As well as a stunning view of the estuary, the boathouse parlour has manuscripts, photographs and even the poet's death mask.

Other stops on the Dylan Thomas tour of Laugharne include the Brown's Hotel, where the poet used to drink, and the churchyard of St Martin's Church, where the poet and his wife Caitlin are both buried.

Castles

Dominating the town is Laugharne Castle, built in the 12th century and converted into a mansion house during the 16th century for Sir John Perrott, said to have been the illegitimate son of Henry VIII. A perfect place for a picnic or an afternoon amble, the ruins of the castle have been a source of inspiration for two great writers, Richard Hughes and Dylan Thomas, who both wrote works there.

Outdoors

Take a short drive out of Laugharne and within minutes you'll be in Pembrey Country Park, a great place to take the family, boasting an array of facilities including horse riding, mini golf, a dry ski slope and an adventure playground. Also within easy driving distance is Saundersfoot Beach, a sandy beach surrounded by cafés and perfect for fishing, sailing or making sandcastles.

Further afield

Head north of Laugharne and you'll find the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast National Park. Head east along the coast from the town and you'll soon be in Swansea, with attractions including Swansea Bay, the National Waterfront Museum and Clyne Gardens.
