Hotels in Larne

Set in one of the main gateways to Northern Island, Larne hotels are a great entry point to the area's rich heritage, welcoming culture and exceptional natural beauty.

Connection to Scotland

Thought to be one of the earliest inhabited areas of Ireland, Larne was first populated by travellers moving along the North Channel from Scotland. The area grew up as a seaport and is today a main connection between Ireland and Scotland, with a regular ferry service to Cairnryan and Troon.

Castles and Museums

The town itself has a number of attractions. The Larne Museum & Arts Centre, located in the Carnegie Centre in the town centre, details the area's history and culture. The ruins of the 13th-century Olderfleet Castle can be found close to the Chaine Memorial Tower, a stone lighthouse built as a memorial to James Chaine who established the sea route between Larne and Scotland. The nearby village of Magheramorne is used as a main filming location for the HBO TV series, Game of Thrones.

Outdoors

Northern Island is an area of exceptional natural beauty and Larne is no exception. The town is surrounded by dramatic landscapes. Carnfunnock Country Park is close by and boasts 191 hectares of woodland, gardens and coastline. There are a number of walking trails for hikers of all abilities in the park, and an adventure playground for the kids to go wild in. One of the most famous attractions is the Carnfunnock Maze, a hedge maze made using around 1,500 mature hornbeams.

Further afield

Head south of Larne and you'll soon find yourself close to Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland and home to a number of historical and cultural attractions including the Grand Opera House, Belfast City Hall, the SS Nomadic and St Anne's Cathedral. Head north of Larne and a short drive will take you to the Giant's Causeway, with an iconic coastline of 40,000 interlocking basalt columns and an education visitor's centre detailing the historical and mythological significance of the site.
