Hotels in La Manga
A dramatic and impossibly narrow spit that separates the deep blue Mediterranean from the Mar Menor lagoon or ‘minor sea', La Manga is a much loved Spanish resort in the region of Murcia. The shallow and perfectly protected waters of the Mar Menor make it an internationally favoured destination for water sports.
Landscape and ecology
Until the 16th century, what is now an almost totally enclosed salt lagoon was an open bay, with a line of islets. Over time, the drift of sedimentation caused by an ancient underlying volcanic feature closed the spaces between these islets and created the epic sand bar that you see today.
It then remained little changed until the 1960s, when water sport-lovers realised the potential of this natural playground and its popularity grew fast. In the 21st century the importance of the natural La Manga habitat is acknowledged and it is a UN Specially Protected Area of the Mediterranean.
La Manga might have been designed by water sports enthusiasts. It provides the perfect environment for having fun or mastering your art, all year round. The marine resort of Mar Menor provides plenty of high quality facilities for beginners as well as experts.
There are no less than 11 sailing schools here with multilingual professional instructors and you can learn all kinds of exciting skills, including catamaran sailing, canoeing, water-skiing and diving. For those with designs on larger craft, there are also four well-equipped marinas.
Although the waters here are famously warm, shallow and sheltered, the more experienced can escape out through the Canal del Estacio to the open sea and explore the islands of Grossa and Ants Farallon.
Away from the ever-tempting water, the region of Murcia has much to recommend it. La Manga hotels are close to many ancient and interesting sites and lovely old towns. Las Amoladeras can trace its roots back to Neolithic times and you can still see the remnants of ancient Greek buildings around Cala del Pino.
It is only a short drive to historic centres such as the regional capital Murcia, Cartagena with its 1,000 year-old harbour and Lorca which is crowned by a 13th-century castle.
