Hotels in Koh Samet
Set in the glimmering Gulf of Thailand, the distinctively T-shaped island of Koh Samet is renowned for its perfectly white sandy beaches, elaborate coral and crystalline waters. Although popular, Koh Samet remains unspoilt, with just the right balance of accommodation, cuisine and nightlife.
History and legend
Many believe that Koh Samet was once the island home of pirates and to this day there is concealed treasure somewhere. The legendary Thai poet Sunthorn Phu set his classical epic here, calling it: ‘The story of Princes, Saga, Mermaids and Giants' and you will encounter statues connected to the work in picturesque locations. Until 1981, Koh Samet was strictly off limits as a destination, and when it was opened up in that year, the Forestry Department of Thailand instantly made it a National Park.
Beaches
If you seek the island's largest expanse of silky white sand, you've found it. Hat Sai Kaew in the north-east boasts a spectacular beach that is predictably popular. There are numerous restaurants and water sport enthusiasts of every kind, as well as plenty of rather more leisurely sun worshippers. It's a great place to people watch at any time of the day.
Ao Thian is very different, with a relaxed ambiance and terrain scattered with huge boulders that shelter little enclaves of sand. During the week, it is possible to savour the beach in near isolation.
The elegant crescent-shaped curve of Ao Wong Deuan is a bay worth exploring. Near to the larger, busier Hat Sai Kaew, it is soothingly quiet on most weekdays.
Restaurants and Cafés
If coffee is an important part of your day, Miss You Café is well equipped to help. You'll find it right next to the National Parks office and once within, you'll be treated to a choice of 13 different coffee varieties and a delicious array of cakes and ice cream. You can indulge in similar treats straight from the beach at Naga Bungalows. Why not greet the morning with croissant, fresh rolls and other patisserie, or stroll in later in the day for pizza or a choice of tofu dishes?
At Sea Breeze you are, just as the name suggests, refreshed by the gentle wind while enjoying spectacular seafood right on the lovely Ao Phai beach. Similarly at Ao Cho you'll find the relaxed low-key surroundings of the Ao Lung Restaurant for tasty, good value Thai dishes. A short stroll from Kho Samet hotels takes you to a world of fresh local seafood, traditional recipes, innovative menus and classic snacks of every shape and size.
