History and legend
Many believe that Koh Samet was once the island home of pirates and to this day there is concealed treasure somewhere. The legendary Thai poet Sunthorn Phu set his classical epic here, calling it: ‘The story of Princes, Saga, Mermaids and Giants' and you will encounter statues connected to the work in picturesque locations. Until 1981, Koh Samet was strictly off limits as a destination, and when it was opened up in that year, the Forestry Department of Thailand instantly made it a National Park.
Beaches
If you seek the island's largest expanse of silky white sand, you've found it. Hat Sai Kaew in the north-east boasts a spectacular beach that is predictably popular. There are numerous restaurants and water sport enthusiasts of every kind, as well as plenty of rather more leisurely sun worshippers. It's a great place to people watch at any time of the day.
