Hotels in Kirkby Lonsdale

The little town of Kirkby Lonsdale sits at the southern tip of the glorious Lake District on the banks of the River Lune. From the churchyard the scene over the river is known as Ruskin's View, because John Ruskin described it as “One of the loveliest views in England”. The scene has also been immortalised by J.M.W. Turner.

History

Kirkby Lonsdale grew from a crossing point over the tranquil River Lune, where several ancient routes converged. It is one of the Cumbrian towns mentioned in the Domesday Book and features a beautiful Norman church with fine carved columns. The town is well-known for the picturesque Devil's Bridge, which dates from around 1370. Its three elegant spans cross the River Lune, creating a perfect scene for painters and photographers. It's thought that the bridge was built by monks from St Mary's Abbey in York, and the ominous name naturally has a legend attached to it. This holds that the Devil appeared to an old woman, promising to build a bridge in exchange for the soul of the first person to cross…However, when it was completed the old woman threw bread over it and her dog, in hot pursuit, evaded and outwitted the Devil!

Landmarks

The town is full of wonderful things to visit and see. Beyond the iconic attractions of the Devil's Bridge and Ruskin's View, there is the stunning little Church of St Mary's and the nearby Folly of St Mary's. In the heart of the town, you can stroll through busy Main Street and Market Street, lined with shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants, all housed in handsome traditional architecture. There is also a serene riverside picnic area and good paths make it easy to wander by the water.

Don't miss the ancient and atmospheric Market Cross in Swine Market, with its well-trodden cobbles and surrounding cottages.
