Hotels in Kingsbridge
A charming and lively market town in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Kingsbridge enjoys a fantastic position on its own estuary, surrounded by wooded hills and rich countryside. Despite its understandable popularity, the town maintains a relaxed charm, all year round.
Kingsbridge has been a market town since the early 13th century and takes its name from a bridge that was built during or before the 10th century to link two royal estates called Alvington and Chillington. Nearby South Sands very nearly became the site for the Prince Regent's pavilion before he finally, famously, settled on Brighton.
Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Kingsbridge was a lively and successful trading centre, and the town centre still has many fine buildings from that era. In The Shambles, or market arcade, you can see the original 16th-century granite piers.
Coast and Countryside
The sheltered estuary is a superb environment for water sports enthusiasts, and nearby there are some beautiful beaches. East Portlemouth Beaches near Salcombe are quiet and pristine and so ideal for families or couples who want to leave the world behind for a while. Each of the three beaches: Fishermans Cove, Smalls Cove and Mill Bay have achieved Safe Bathing status, as the waters are shallow, clean and great for paddling.
Salcombe itself boasts two fine beaches in North Sands Beach and South Sands Beach, both of which have that South Devon trademark combination of cleanliness, natural beauty and safety for everyone.
Back on dry land, the area around Kingsbridge offers a wealth of paths and bridleways through the gorgeous Devon countryside. For a really wild walk, you could explore the nearby edges of Dartmoor.
Restaurants and cafés
Kingsbridge is full of welcoming places to eat and relax, many of them proudly using local seafood and other fine quality produce. The Old Bakery in the centre of town makes full use of its charcoal grill to create wonderful dishes with Mediterranean character and also serves fortifying brunches with excellent coffee.
On Mill Street you will find the Seven Stars, which is a welcoming pub and restaurant with a good reputation. Whether you seek a morning cappuccino, a light lunch or a sumptuous dinner by candlelight in the spacious conservatory, they will happily oblige.
In a glorious spot right on the quayside of Kingsbridge is The Crabshell Inn, which is fast gaining itself an enviable reputation for great food and friendly surroundings. From Kingsbridge hotels you can enjoy the full spectrum of fine food, friendly cafés, and extraordinary locations that are typical of this special part of Devon.
