Castles

If you're looking for landmark castles and sweeping dramatic vistas, Inverurie is a fantastic choice. The town is a good base for forays into the local area, and within easy reach of the town are Castle Fraser, Tulquhon Castle and Crathes Castle. Castle Fraser is one of the largest Scottish castles and an excellent place to visit if you're travelling with the family. In addition to the castle itself there are 140 hectares of countryside to explore that span woodland trails and an adventure playground. Tulquhon Castle is one of the area's most ornate castles, featuring a lavish gatehouse and sprawling grounds.

Fishing and golf

The area around Inverurie is famous for fly-fishing and lessons are normally available, or can be arranged, at either one of tourist centres or through your hotel. If golf is more to your taking, the Inverurie Golf Course is an 18-hole course set on Davah Hill, while in the local vicinity you'll also find the Oldmeldrum Golf Course and the Kintore Golf Course.

Whisky

Another favourite Scottish pastime, Whisky tasting, can be enjoyed at the Glen Garioch distillery. Established in 1797, the distillery is located in the old town of Oldmeldrum close to Aberdeen. It takes it name from the Garioch, the finest growing barley area of Scotland. Glen Garioch single malt scotch whiskies have won numerous awards, so why not treat yourself with a dram after going on a tour of the distillery?

Further afield

If you drive out of Inverurie and head west, you'll soon find yourself close to the Cairngorms National Park, boasting some of the most beautiful countryside in the whole of Scotland. If you make your way east you'll instead come to Aberdeen, Scotland's third biggest city and home to a range of cultural and historical attractions including St Machar's Cathedral, Aberdeen Art Gallery and the Cruickshank Botanic Garden.
