Situated close to Interlaken Ost Station, Harder Kulm is an area of Interlaken that offers breathtaking panoramic views and an extensive network of hiking trails with a summit reaching 1,322 metres. Jungfrau is another nearby mountain, the third highest in the Bernese Alps, and even if you don't plan on tackling it with an ice pick it's still beautiful to behold from a distance.
The iconic lakes that you see on nearly every postcard of Switzerland surround Interlaken. To one side of the town is Lake Brienz, with a length of around 14km, and to the other is Lake Thun, with a length of around 17.5km. Hiking trips along the perimeter of the lake and boat trips around the surface of the lake are every popular, as well as extreme sporting activities such as climbing and abseiling.
One of the area's most famous historical sites is Interlaken Abbey, dating back to 1133 when it was taken under the protection of Lothair III, the Holy Roman Emperor. The village of Aarmühle existed during the 14th century but was eventually absorbed into Interlaken as it grew in response to the rise of tourism during the Victorian period. Landscape artists during this period and their paintings of the countryside surrounding Interlaken made it a go-to destination for rich holidaymakers.
In the south of Interlaken is Jungfrau Park, originally known as Mystery Theme Park when it was launched as a paranormal-themed amusement park owned by author Erich von Däniken. The original park closed in 2006 but is now open again and makes for a great family day-trip if you're looking for an alternative to the mountains and lakes.
The Canton of Bern
Interlaken is set in the second largest of the Swiss Cantons, the Canton of Bern. On the other side of Lake Thun is the town of Thun itself. Keep driving north from Thun and you'll eventually come to Bern, the Swiss capital, where you'll find some of the country's best historical and cultural attractions including Bern Historical Museum and the Federal Palace of Switzerland.
