Hotels in Hythe

A charming little town in Hampshire, Hythe is set by the shore of Southampton Water. Hythe Hotels offer excellent access to the sea and the nearby New Forest National Park, and are a short ferry journey from the city of Southampton.

History

Hythe has a history that dates back to the 13th century, with the ferry crossing between Hythe and Southampton marked on a 16th-century map by Christopher Saxton. From then until the 20th century the town has been little more than small fishing village, but it has grown in recent decades as a popular tourist destination. It's still a small town, but there's now a range of shops and cafés open for business around the high street area.

Markets

If you stay in a Hythe hotel you can expect to see regular markets in the town – a great place to spend a few hours perusing through everything from eggs, bread, fruit, locally made honey and amber jewellery. There are regular farmers markets and the weekly Waterside Country Market, taking place every Friday at the St Andrews Church Centre. If you're travelling with family, there are also plenty of snacks and treats for kids.

Southampton

Cross the water on the ferry and you'll soon find yourself in the vibrant city of Southampton. Here you'll find all the shops, restaurants, bars, clubs and museums you'd expect of a big city, as well as a number of historical and cultural attractions including the Tudor House and Gardens, Southampton City Art Gallery, SeaCity Museum and the Mayflower Theatre. If you're interested in sailing, Southampton is an ideal place to book a few lessons.

New Forest National Park

Head in the opposite direction of Southampton and within minutes by car you'll find the New Forest National Park. One of the largest remaining tracts of unenclosed land, this National Park is a fantastic place for romantic bike rides or family treks through the country. There is also wide range of wildlife on show, including ponies, buzzards, deer and adders. Ask at one of the local tourist centres for advice on planning a walk through the park.
