Hotels in Houston

Houston is a historic village in the county of Renfrewshire, in the west-central lowlands of Scotland. With a dedicated conservation area at its centre, and a location within some of the most beautiful lowlands in Scotland, the village is a popular destination for tourists year-round.

Historic village centre

From your Houston hotel it is imperative you take a walk around the village's beautiful centre. Now listed as a dedicated conservation area, it is largely made up of 17th-century whitewashed cottages, that really are a quaint and lovely sight to behold.

For more ancient intrigue head out of the village towards Houston House, whose grounds contain remains of the 16th-century Houston Castle. Next to the house is Houston and Killellan Kirk, the local parish church, which is well worth a look around.

If you've got a cold you can't shake off, make sure you visit one of the village's two ancient wells, once considered to have healing powers. St. Fillan's Well is located right next to Houston House, while St. Peter's Well is closer to the village centre and gives its name to a locally brewed ale.

Beer town

After a different kind of healing spring? Well, you are in luck as the village is also home to the Houston Brewing Company, which is housed in the Fox & Hounds Pub and produces a number of award-winning cask ales.

The microbrewery also offers excellent guided tours with practical demonstrations of the brewing process, with guaranteed refreshing samples at the end of each tour. Once a year the Houston Beer Festival takes place, and the village centre comes alive, as the three main pubs open their doors to real ale enthusiasts who travel from far and wide.

Whether you are a beer nut or not, a visit to one of Houston's lovely public houses is never a bad idea. Besides the Fox & Hounds, there is also The Houston Inn on North Street and the Crosskeys Inn on Main Street. The Houston is perfect for a pint of the local nectar, while the Crosskeys also serves up top-quality pub grub when you're feeling hungry.

Delta Force

Those of you whose entertainment comes in a slightly higher octane format will be pleased to learn that Houston is also home to Delta Force Paintball West Glasgow. The centre has seven action-packed game scenarios, including two double-decker buses, a Viet Cong village and Afghan command posts.

Glasgow and the Clyde Valley

Your Houston hotel also affords a cosy and inexpensive base from which to explore all that this area of Scotland has to offer. Scotland's biggest and most vibrant city, Glasgow, is just a short drive away, while the natural beauty of the Clyde Valley can be reached on foot. However, with so much to do in and around Houston, you may find you have no time to go further afield.
