Hitchin town centre

Hawkins of Hitchin is an independent department store, first founded in 1863, and the town also boasts a selection of antiquarian bookshops and the lively Hitchin Market. Every summer the town hosts a number of talks and events as part of the Hitchin Festival.

One of the most impressive historical buildings in Hitchin is St Mary's Church. The largest parish church in Hertfordshire, St Mary's was built with money from Hitchin's prosperous wool trade and dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. The church also features a tower that dates from the 12th century. Also worth a visit in Hitchin is the British Schools Museum, detailing the evolution of the school classroom from 1810 to 1960. Kids and dress up in Victorian costumes and adults can try their hand at using dip-in pens and ink amongst other forgotten skills.

Also close to the town is Hitchin Lavender farm – a treat for both the eyes and the nose. Wandering up and down miles of sweet smelling lavender is a relaxing way to spend a few hours. Visitors to the farm are able to pick their own lavender bunches to take home at the end of the tour.

Countryside

Hitchin is within easy reach of several areas of outstanding natural beauty. There are a number of walking and bike routes to follow through the Northern Chilterns. A fantastic destination for experiencing the countryside is Barton Hills National Nature Reserve, covering miles of chalk grassland and woodland. Also nearby is Letchworth Garden City where you'll find a number of cafés, shops and restaurants.

Travel a little further afield and you'll soon reach Knebworth House, a large Gothic mansion dating from the 15th century and frequently home to large open-air rock concerts.
