Hotels in Hemel Hempstead
A large town in Hertfordshire, Hemel Hempstead is neighboured by picturesque villages and notable market towns, and London is just a half-hour train journey away. Book a Hemel Hempstead hotel with us and discover a modern town with heritage roots.
Gadebridge Park
Consisting of nearly 80 acres, Gadebridge Park, on the northern fringes of Hemel Hempstead, includes a Roman archaeological site, two bowling greens, and crazy golf, pétanque and croquet courses. It's also the location of the Walled Garden and played a significant part in the town's history. In 1539 Henry VIII granted Hemel a charter which conferred upon it the status of a market town. Local legend has it that the King passed the charter from the upper window of the Charter Tower, which is all that remains of one of two Charter Houses. The other house, or Bury House as it was, exists now as the Walled Garden.
Paper chase
Less than two miles south-west of Hemel lies Frogmore Paper Mill, the world's oldest mechanised paper mill. We all know paper is made from trees but how exactly was it made? And how does it continue to be made in this working mill? Take a guided tour to find out and learn about this fascinating industry and how it affected the area. See steam-driven machines from two centuries ago and make your own paper on a vintage machine.
Get active!
Hemel Hempstead boasts world-class sports facilities and XC is where you can climb and cave to your heart's content. Here you'll find the longest indoor organic caving system in Europe – the rock climbing wall is 14 metres high and 60 metres wide. There's also a huge indoor skate park which includes a two and a half metre bowl. That's not all, there are 200m2 of bouldering, and the high-ropes course is 12m high. The Home Counties are not renowned for prodigious levels of snowfall but at the Snow Centre, this is never a problem. Whether you're into skiing or snowboarding, you'll find a variety of dry slopes and passes including a 160 metre main slope.
Eating and drinking
The Cochin brings south-west Indian cuisine, with its own authentic taste and aromas, to Hemel. The masala dosa and fish dishes are particularly popular. Another Indian eatery and one that opens for brunch, high tea and dinner is Infinity, which has garnered plaudits for its fresh-cooked food and warm, friendly service. Adding to Hemel's coterie of cosmopolitan eateries, Kasbah is cooking up a culinary storm with its traditional Moroccan menu which includes mouth-watering tagines.
Shopping
There are two shopping centres in Hemel and Marlowes is the biggest, with over 60 shops that include many high street favourites. Nearby Riverside contains a department store and several other shops. An outdoor market can be found in the town's pedestrianised area which opens Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Old Town's pretty High Street has a selection of independently owned shops, bistros and period pubs.
