Haydock Park

A racecourse that puts on over 30 race days each year, Haydock Park opened in 1899 and is one of the most popular venues for race meetings in the North. The oval course is surrounded by four grandstands and over 30 private viewing suites, as well as restaurants and bars. The Grand National Trial, the Temple Stakes, the Old Newton Cup, Lancashire Oaks, the Sprint Cup and the Betfair Chase are just some of the events that are held here each year. And it's not just about the horses because Haydock Park also hosts concerts by major artists such as the Kaiser Chiefs and Kylie Minogue, not to mention family fun days.

You need wheels

Swapping four legs for four wheels, the Three Sisters Racing Circuit, four miles north of Haydock, offers the chance for some high-speed chicanery in a variety of vehicles from karts to Formula 1 cars, or 'supercars' like Aston Martin or Ferrari. You can strap yourself into the driving seat of the car of your dreams and take it for a spin around the race circuit.

Carr Mill Dam

Merseyside's largest body of inland water, Carr Mill Dam was originally just a small mill pond. It was enlarged in the mid-18th century to the size of a large reservoir and expanded yet again towards the end of the 19th century. The Dam – populated by birds such as glaucous gulls and dunlins and butterflies that include orange tips and meadow browns – is perfect for walks, duck-feeding and fishing. Don't be surprised to see the occasional speedboat whizzing about, because the Dam is also the home of the Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club who also host waterskiing and wake-boarding activities.

Nearby St Helens is where you'll discover World of Glass. Here you can see how, just by using sand, soda and lime, glass is created. You'll even get the chance to try your hand glass blowing and create your own glass souvenir, such a paperweight or a hanging bauble.
