Hotels in Harpenden

One of London's most affluent commuter towns, Harpenden is a highly desirable living destination, and benefits from frequent, fast railway links to the centre of the capital.

Origins

This area of Hertfordshire has been inhabited since the pre-Roman era, although it wasn't until the construction of the local railway network in the Victorian period that Harpenden prospered into a sought-after residential community. The town is still overlooked by its charming St Nicholas Church, which was originally built in the early 13th century, although it was replaced in the late 19th century, when many medieval churches were restored in England.

What to see in the area

Shaw's Corner

Nearby is famous Shaw's Corner, which is the former home of the distinguished playwright Bernard Shaw and is renowned for its attractive Arts and Crafts features. The Irish playwright, who founded the London School of Economics, spent much of his career exposing Britain's social problems in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He also received the coveted Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925, and earned an Oscar in 1938 (Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay).

St Albans Cathedral

Featuring England's longest cathedral nave, St Albans Cathedral was first built shortly after the Norman Conquest and is a classic example of Romanesque and Gothic-style architecture. The building, which is almost 170 metres in length, was originally an abbey, and it was built on a site that was occupied by an even older structure that may have existed as early as the 4th century.

Where to stay

For a charismatic venue overlooking beautifully landscaped grounds, choose The Grove Harpenden, one of the most exquisite Harpenden hotels, or consider the opulent Harpenden House Hotel. For another luxury venue in magnificent surroundings, stay at the Luton Hoo Hotel Golf and Spa, or book a stay at the stylish, budget friendly Premier Inn Luton South M1, Jct 9.

Restaurants

For delicious Chinese dishes, dine at the Oriental Aroma restaurant, or enjoy some divine Greek, Spanish or Mediterranean-themed food at the Bar Azita. For some traditionally but equally tasty British food, head to Godfrey's, or treat yourself to some vibrant Middle Eastern flavours at The Vine Leaves.
