Out and about

Harome is a great place to be based if you're looking to explore the best that the Ryedale District has to offer. The North York Moors National Park is undoubtedly the main attraction in the area, appealing to walkers and nature lovers in particular. Open heather moorland sweeps into ancient woodland and the landscape is dotted with ruined abbeys and majestic sea cliffs. Venture out at night to take in the clear, unpolluted sky.

To the south of the village lie the Howardian Hills, classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's filled with rolling countryside, woodland and a patchwork of arable fields and green pastures.

Pay a visit to the National Trust-owned Nunnington Hall, a wonderful Yorkshire manor house set on the banks of the River Rye. Another impressive stately home close by is Hovingham Hall, an 18th-centruy building owned by the Worsley family who open it up to the public during the month of June.

Helmsley street market takes place each Friday and is certainly worth a look. It's said there has been a market in the town since the 13th century. A craft fair is also typically held at the same time above the Old Town Hall. If you're in the area, drop by Helmsley Castle, a 900-year-old medieval fortress that was turned into a Tudor mansion before becoming a Victorian-era ruin.

For a quiet rural area there is an impressive range of quality dining options in and around the village of Harome. The Star Inn on Owmen Field Lane is a Michelin 1-star restaurant that offers a modern Yorkshire style of cooking. On Mill Street you'll find The Pheasant Hotel, an award-winning restaurant specialising in local, seasonal dishes.

The Royal Oak Inn Nunnington has a wide selection of Italian dishes as well as traditional pub classics, while Gepetto's Restaurant in Helmsley also specialises in Mediterranean cuisine. You'll be spoilt for choice with pizzas, pasta dishes and risottos all available, along with fresh Italian bread.
