Hotels in Gretna
Gretna is a town in Dumfries and Galloway, southern Scotland. Historically linked to weddings because of the more liberal marriage laws in Scotland, Gretna and the surrounding area is a popular tourist destination.
Gretna's claim to fame arose in 1753 when an Act of Parliament, Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act, was passed in England. The Act stated that if both of those who wish to marry were not at least 21 years old, their parents had to give consent. Due to England and Scotland being different countries, the Act did not apply in Scotland, whose laws allowed boys and girls to marry at 14 and 12 respectively, without parental consent. As a result of this Act, many fled England, and the first Scottish town they reached was often Gretna.
Follow the romance trail of Dumfries & Galloway and discover the sweet side of the region's history:
Step inside the ancient Gretna Green Famous Blacksmiths' Shop, where the past is eerily brought to life as you pass through the narrow walls under the low ceiling. Listen to the voices of a frantic young couple as they dash over the border in a fascinating audio-visual display. Examine letters, telegrams and marriage certificates of those who defied relatives to follow their hearts, and telegraphs from frantic parents desperate to stop wayward daughters.
Continue with a visit to the Coach Museum which houses a rare collection of 19th-century coaches and other historic modes of transport. Marvel at the magnificent royal carriage, the State Landau, used by King William IV and Queen Adelaide. You'll even find some of the actual coaches which transported couples from across England to their weddings at Gretna Green.
Take a pleasant stroll through the Sculpture Garden and enjoy the world famous statue ‘Gretna Green Lovers'. Navigate the twists and turns of the Courtship Maze and hope that your partner for life is waiting in the centre.
