Hotels in Gothenburg
Sweden's second-biggest city is Gothenburg, the foodie's heaven and the 12th most inventive city in the world (according to Forbes). It sits at the edge of the Kattegat, a body of water which feeds into the North Sea. The city is also known as Goteborg, and is the home of Sweden's Museum of World Culture.
The city has been an important international trade hub for so long that English is widely spoken here, along with Scots and Dutch. Checking into any Gothenburg hotels is much simpler when you can do it in your own native language.
Sightseeing in Gothenburg
The harbour and the city centre are very walkable, so taking in all of Gothenburg's main attractions is simple. Gothenburg Opera House is around the corner from the ferry terminal, and is a modern building representing 20th-century design. As well as orchestra performances, it also hosts musicals and modern theatre.
The Port of Gothenburg is the largest in any of the Nordic countries. It's close to the Maritime Museum and several city tram stops. There's also the Universeum science museum, which covers seven floors and is open every single day of the year.
Goteborg Landvetter Airport is your way in and out of the city by air. It has flights internally to Stockholm, as well as to London, Manchester and Cambridge.
Food and drink
The world-class restaurants in Gothenburg have customers and food reviewers alike lining up to book a SEOSITE_LEVEL_DESCRIPTION. Fishing villages along the coastline bring in a variety of fresh fish and seafood, including mussels and lobster.
SK Mat & Manniskor has earned a Michelin star for its cosy atmosphere and exceptional food – and so has basement restaurant 28+. In total, six restaurants in the area have at least one star.
Activities
Go kayaking or canoeing along the coastline of western Sweden. There are thousands of lakes in the area, and there are sheltered waterways around for beginners and less confident rowers. Sweden gives you unrivalled access to the lakes – you can kayak and moor up pretty much anywhere you like.
A more relaxed way to enjoy yourself is at the annual Goteborg International Film Festival. It's in January, before the larger Gothenburg Culture Festival, which runs for six days in August.
