Hotels in Gosport

On England's south coast, Gosport in Hampshire has long been an important base for Britain's navy. It sits on a peninsula opposite Portsmouth Harbour, just four minutes away by ferry. Some of the area's historic naval bases and forts are now English Heritage properties and sites of interest. The town gets an influx of several thousand people every summer, and Gosport hotels get booked up fast at peak times.

Exploring Gosport

The town's maritime links include the Royal Navy Submarine Museum. You can explore HMS Alliance and WWII submarine Holland 1, learning more about both British naval history and the local area.

More excitement can be found at Explosion! Museum of Naval Firepower. Housed in an 18th-century building, the museum has exhibitions of mines, cannons, large guns and missiles.

On Gosport's side of the bay, the Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve is about half an hour away by car. There's something different to see every season, from the nesting birds in the spring to the roe deer in autumn.

Sightseeing

Take a cruise from Gosport or nearby Portsmouth around the Solent and the south coast of England. There are day trips to Lymington and Cowes, as well as cream tea cruises taking in local forts and the Medina River over tea and cake.

Some cruise routes take you over to the Isle of Wight. The island is a popular tourist attraction in itself, and makes a great destination for family days out.

If you decide to stay on land, Gosport isn't far from junctions nine, ten and 11 of the M27. The route carries on to the west, in the direction of Southampton.

Food and drink

Being right by the sea, Gosport has plenty of traditional fish and chip shops. You can also find plenty of waterside bars, restaurants and cafés.

When you're deciding on somewhere to eat, look out for the Hampshire Hospitality mark. The county rewards the best restaurants and bars with a seal of approval, confirming their quality and the friendly welcome you'll get when you walk in.

In summer, head over the bay to the Portsmouth Festival of Food, also known as the Southsea Food Festival. It's a free, family-friendly event, with cooking demos and masterclasses running all weekend.
