Hotels in Goathland

All year round, people come to Goathland – or, as they know it, Aidensfield from classic TV show Heartbeat. You may also have seen the village mentioned in 21st-century literature. The village is nestled within the scenic North York Moors, yet is only an hour's drive from the seaside town of Scarborough. It's also easy to make a day trip to Goathland from York or Middlesborough.

Heartbeat country

A wander around the village will take you back to Aidensfield's most famous sights and locations. The garage, funeral director and local shops have been used in the backdrops for several episodes. Out of all Goathland hotels, the most popular is the Goathland Hotel itself – otherwise known as the Aidensfield Arms.

The main landmark is the RAF Fylingdales Early Warning Station. The station is still there, but the distinctive ‘golf ball' structures on top are no more. You can also find Aidensfield Stores in town, with products from the 1960s on display in the windows.

Nearby Whitby was another regular filming location. The town is connected to the legend of Dracula – and to the real story of explorer Captain Cook.

North York Moors

With widespread heather and long-distance walking trails, the moors are an attraction all of their own. It encompasses Helmsley Castle, Rievaulx Abbey and six Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserves.

There's a footpath from the village to Mallyan Spout, the area's most famous waterfall. It was one of Goathland's original tourist attractions, and the walk through woodland is just as pretty as the falls.

The steam-powered trains on the North Yorkshire Railway stop at Goathland. The line carries the most passengers of any UK heritage railway, so book early. Interestingly, the station has also appeared on screen as a stop for the Hogwarts Express in several Harry Potter films.

Goathland food and drink

Yorkshire food is typically hearty and filling, with no scrimping on the portion sizes. Tuck into a Yorkshire hotpot at one of the restaurants in Lastingham, which is around 40 minutes away by car.

You'll find a number of quiet, cosy tea rooms in Goathland. Dining at one is a great chance to try some Yorkshire Tea – the locals will tell you to always ask for extra hot water.
