Hotels in Glenshee

Most people come to Glenshee to visit the ski resort. The main glen itself, the Spittal of Glenshee, has been the location of Glenshee hotels for hundreds of years. Glenshee is also known as ‘the fairy glen'. It's a stop on the long-distance Cateran Trail, which runs in a 64-mile circle from and back to Blairgowrie.

Glenshee Ski Resort is Scotland's biggest – not to mention the largest in the UK, and with the most extensive ski lift system. It's nicknamed ‘Three Valleys', as the site does indeed cover three valleys and four mountains.

The mix of green, blue, red and black ski runs ensures there's a piste for all ability levels.

You can also try winter snowboarding and mountain biking in the summer at Glenshee. It hosted the first British Snowboard Championships, and has freestyle and alpine terrains. The mountain bike trail is surrounded by Sites of Scientific Special Interest (SSSI).

Scotland's Highlands

Along with the Lowlands, the Highlands are an important historic region of Scotland. Glenshee is considered the ‘hidden route' to the Highlands. The ski resort is technically on the south side of Cairngorms National Park.

Nearby Dalnaglar Castle was built in the 16th century. The castle is open to private bookings a few times a year. It was originally a hunting lodge, and was designed by Her Majesty the Queen's architect – the same person who styled Balmoral Castle.

Food and drink in Glenshee

The ski resort has three cafés to grab a snack and a warming bite to eat. You have panoramic views of the area from Cairnwell Café, and at Base Café the meats and bakery items are sourced from local providers.

For something a bit different, try the Glenshee Pottery Tea Room. Sit and take tea after trying to throw your own pot. Coffee is served in hand-made mugs fired in the pottery room's kiln.

Dalmunzie Castle close by has its own restaurant, a typical feature of many regional old-style hotels. It's been featured in the Michelin Guide for five years running (2007-2013).
