Hotels in Girona
Within the Spanish region of Catalonia, Girona is an important city that feels more like a town. The brightly coloured buildings along the waterside lend it a fresh and youthful atmosphere. Girona is also known for having a large number of festivals throughout the year, celebrating everything from flowers to the town's military history and St Narcissus.
The area's youth hostels and campsites attract holidaymakers on a budget, and there are also plenty of Girona hotels and villas.
History and architecture
Girona claims the nicest preserved ‘El Call' (medieval Jewish quarter) in Catalonia. The whole Jewish population was expelled from the area in 1492. Today, the quarter is a main point of interest for tourists.
The city's cobbled streets, old bath houses and the Onyar river running down the middle create a quieter, countryside feel for Girona. It's actually very close to major roads and little more than an hour from Barcelona by car.
On the river's east side, the town walls hem in Girona's old town. Pavement cafés and restaurants are bunched along these pedestrian-friendly streets, the main one known as the ‘Rambla' running alongside the river.
Things to do in Girona
Culture is a huge part of the town, as the Girona Art Museum shows. The museum's exhibits are in chronological order, from Romanesque to the 20th century.
Girona also has a Cinema Museum. It preserves and showcases the history of film with over 20,000 items. The late Thomas Mallol created the collection, scouring flea markets and speaking with collectors all over Spain and France.
Stay out and experience Girona's vibrant nightlife. Choose from the town's many bars, pubs, discos and nightclubs. They range from packed to nice and quiet, so no matter what mood you're in there's somewhere to go.
Food in Catalonia
The region's cuisine uses lots of fresh vegeSEOSITE_LEVEL_DESCRIPTIONs, seafood, olive oil and spices. Adults can wash their food down with ratafia, a sweet liqueur produced with regional herbs.
Girona's main Catalonian food is xuixos – small fried pastries filled with crema catalana. Pick these up in one of the town's many cake shops.
If you visit in the spring, you can time your visit with the week-long Girona Gastronomy Festival in March. Lots of restaurants in the city take part, offering special menus and set-price courses.
