Hotels in Elvington
Overlooking the scenic valley of the River Derwent, the quiet village of Elvington is just a short drive from one of England's most splendid cathedral cities, ancient York. This settlement has existed since the Middle Ages, and was home to the RAF Elvington military site until the 1990s.
The Yorkshire Air Museum
Today, the former RAF site is the Yorkshire Air Museum, which is Britain's largest independently operated air museum and has a special Allied Air Forces Memorial. Here, you can see dozens of historic military aircraft and vehicles in a venue that has been voted the Top Specialist Attraction in Britain, and which is predominantly managed by volunteers. The museum also organises many themed events throughout the year, one of the best known of which is the Allied Forces Memorial Day in September.
No visit to York would be complete without witnessing one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Europe, York Minster. This terrific landmark, which is noted for its elaborate Perpendicular style, replaced a much older 7th-century wooden church, and is revered for its outstanding stained-glass windows. The city is also renowned for the York Castle Museum, which features the ruins of a Norman castle and opened as a public exhibition gallery in 1938.
Other major attractions in York include the family-friendly National Railway Museum, the Jorvik Viking Centre, and the formidable York Dungeon. For fantastic shopping, explore The Shambles, where you can visit many historic independent boutiques.
