Hotels in Dunfanaghy

Home to an elegant early-Victorian market square, Dunfanaghy benefited from a revolutionary new transport link in 1903, when it was connected to the railway, although the line closed later in the 20th century, when cars became increasingly more affordable and popular.

Killahoey Beach

Probably one of the cleanest and most aesthetically pleasing beaches in Europe, Killahoey Beach has earned the coveted Blue Flag award and comprises a vast sandy beach overlooked by a golf course. Known locally as Dunfanaghy Beach, it is patrolled by a lifeguard during the warmer months and is reasonably well sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds.

Tramore Strand

Another outstanding sandy beach, secluded Tramore Strand is significantly wider and more exposed to the Atlantic waves. On a clear day, it is also a spectacular place to witness Atlantic sunsets, although the scenery here is certainly breathtaking whatever the weather.

Other places to visit in the local area

Just to the south of Dunfanaghy is the prominent peak of Muckish, which is 666m in height and is one of the highest peaks of the Derryveagh Mountains. The mountain can be accessed via the scenic Miner's Path, and is next to the smaller but still impressive Crocknalaragagh peak.

Places to stay

For well-presented, affordable Dunfanaghy hotels, choose the friendly Arnolds Hotel, or consider the welcoming Anseo Bed & Breakfast. If you're interested in staying a little further afield, you can book a stay at the romantic Beach Hotel or the charming Downings Bay Hotel, or choose the luxury Rosapenna Hotel & Golf Resort with its mesmerising sea views.

Where to eat

For divine Irish cuisine, choose Lizzie's Diner, or consider the Mill Restaurant if you'd like some delicious European dishes. If you're after some fabulous homemade Pizzas, go to the Red Oven Wood-Fired Pizzeria or, for some of the freshest seafood in the region, head to the Cove Restaurant.
