Barking Park Light Railway's 7.25 inch gauge trains (about four miles away from Dagenham) take you on a journey just under a quarter of a mile from Park Gates Station to Lakeside Halt. Currently their stable of locomotives consists of two battery electric locomotives and a diesel hydraulic locomotive.

Namco Funscape Dagenham – Vintage family fun with the option of some modern ‘glow bowling' – bowling with a UV twist. Kids love wearing white or fluorescent clothes to get the most out of the experience! There's also a cool arcade with a great range of modern video games, plus a ping pong table, several pool tables and much, much more.

Bedfords Park Visitor Centre, about seven miles away, offers a great opportunity to learn about the wildlife that can be found in the surrounding 215-acre park. The park boasts fantastic views of London and a number of interesting habitats for the kids to explore, such as wildflower and hay meadows, mature woodland, marshy areas, ponds and streams.

Firepower, the Royal Artillery Museum, is full of history, with guns, tanks and military equipment on show. There is plenty to see and find out in a variety of different displays and exhibits, some of which are audio-visual and provide an interesting insight into the history of conflict.

Valence House is the local history museum for the parishes and boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, and is housed in a beautiful timber-framed 15th-century manor house. Of particular interest are a fine set of 16th, 17th and 18th-century portraits of the Fanshawe family and a period room of the same date. There is also a moat, herb garden, shop and café.

For a decent cheap eat, at less than £5 the Yaki Noodle Bar serves a wide selection of Chinese and Vietnamese dishes. The food is fantastic, the portions generous and the service swift.

Tucked away just off of the high street opposite the Eva Hart pub is a great family-run Italian restaurant, Casa Mia. Complete with alfresco dining in the warmer months, the staff are very welcoming and the fantastic food is great value.
